Golija-Studenica Biosphere Reserve (Serbia) as a Driver of Change

In the 50 years since UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) was launched, 727 sites in 131 countries have gained status of biosphere reserve (BR). Golija-Studenica BR belongs to group BRs that been active for past 20 years. This is one most prominent protected areas first its kind Serbia. A balance between biodiversity conservation, as primary goal protection, promotion sustainable profitable activities involving diverse actors has yet be achieved. research aims provide a contextual understanding changes draw lessons future development. It relies on experiential practical knowledge stakeholders, including management bodies, NGO sector local population itself. The methodology based qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. Research results show model subtle, time-reliant driver change, some unintentional side-effects. brings about how are managed, affects economic behaviour population, raises awareness environmental issues, an impact demographic trends social change.
